Zoo employees have quarterly emergency response drills

About six months before a man threw himself into the San Francisco Zoo’s grizzly bear enclosure, employees had practiced their emergency responses with a drill in the bear section.

Zoo Director Tanya Peterson said she was pleased with and thankful for the response from the zoo keepers and the officers from the Taraval Station at the time of the break-in.

The zoo has been practicing quarterly drills, but Peterson said she’s considering making them more frequent.

She also said the zoo is keeping in touch with District Attorney Kamala Harris about finalizing a prosecution against the offender.
