ZinZanni’s changing of the guard

A three-month-long run of “Love, Chaos and Couture: All Dressed Up with Someplace to Go” ends this weekend at Teatro ZinZanni, the formidable dinner theater and variety show in the big tent on Pier 29.

After a breather, a new production — “Hail Caesar!” with Frank Ferrante as Caesar and Dreya Weber as Cleopatra — opens Thursday under the antique cabaret tent imported from Belgium.

The current show, featuring lavish costumes by fashion designer and bridal gown specialist Lulu Yang, also features Ferrante and Tony Award-winner Liliane Montevecchi. The story in “Love, Chaos and Couture” is that Ferrante runs a club in The City, and he lures his former lover (and persistent heartthrob) Montevecchi to show her fall collection at ZinZanni instead of Milan.

Fashionistas of The City gather, many with cabaret, circus and high-arts talent to burn — and display.

After Sunday’s performance, however, Montevecchi will bid goodbye, at least for a while, to ZinZanni, which has become her second home.

In the upcoming show, don’t look for Julius. The Caesar of the piece is a chef, other name unknown (perhaps in a witness-protection program). With original songs by Martha Davis of The Motels, “Hail Caesar!” does feature the “original” Cleopatra, mysteriously resurrected, and falling in love with the chef sporting a name familiar to the Queen of the Nile.

Entertainment includes Mr. PP, who juggles ping-pong balls (don’t underestimate the difficulty of that enterprise); Dr. Rosetta Champollion, great grand-daughter of the Rosetta Stone translator; Nep, daughter of Osiris; an acrobatic King of Scotland; and other zany inhabitants of ZinZanni.

New to San Francisco is diva Dreya Weber, a performer with an unusual combination of talent — actress, singer, musician, film star, aerialist and choreographer. As an aerialist, she most recently appeared in and choreographed Pink’s 2010 Grammy performance. Other credits include work with Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, Cher, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood and the Moscow State Circus.
