A 12-year-old boy is facing charges after he was caught behind the wheel of a stolen car in the Bayview district last weekend, police said.

At 2:44 p.m. Saturday, police said, officers responded to the area of Palou Avenue and Hawes Street on a report of a vehicle being driven by a 12-year-old.

Sure enough, they reportedly found that vehicle parked in the 1100 block of Palou with the pre-teen behind the wheel.

“The suspect admitted to driving the car around the block, but could not tell the officers who the vehicle belonged to,” police said.

Police soon learned the vehicle had been stolen. The child was booked for auto theft and possession of stolen property at the Juvenile Justice Center. His identity is not being released because he is a minor.

Three teenage passengers in the car were released to their parents, police said.
