Yee honored by student journalist groups

Days after lauding college students for digging shredded documents out of the garbage, state Sen. Leland Yee, D-S.F., is receiving two awards for protecting student journalists and their advisers.

The Journalism Education Association presented Yee with its Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award at a ceremony in Portland, Oregon, while the California College Media Association present Yee with the Leland Yee Award. Both awards were presented Saturday.

In 2006, Yee authored AB 2581, which prohibited censorship of college student press in California and made it illegal to retaliate against students for exercising this right.

SB 1370 extended this protection from retaliation to university employees, including faculty advisers, in 2008.
