W.Va. hospital CEO lauds reversal of coverage drop

The chief executive of Thomas Health System says a health insurer's decision to reverse its plans to end coverage for scores of Medicare recipients at two hospitals is a "victory for West Virginia."

Stephen P. Dexter says patients and state politicians "sent a message" that they wouldn't stand for Humana's plans to remove Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis hospitals from its preferred-provider network. Lexington, Ky.-based Humana informed Dexter last week that it was no longer planning to do so, according to The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/wDsMum ).

Humana initially notified Dexter of its intentions to remove the two hospitals from its preferred-provider list in a Nov. 30 letter. Thousands of patients became upset that their medical costs would have increased significantly under Humana's proposed termination unless they changed hospitals and physicians.
