Write-in candidates take on incumbents in county races

Two new candidates for a congressional seat and for coroner have jumped into the race at the last minute, qualifying as write-in candidates.

Belmont resident and Libertarian Party member Harland Harrison will challenge U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo.

Stacie Nevares of San Mateo will take on Robert Foucrault for coroner.

Harrison attacks Lantos for his support for the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act. Lantos could not be reached at press time to respond.

Nevares, a Coroner’s Office assistant who has worked with incumbent Robert Foucrault for two-and-a-half years, said she wants to bring the office into the 21st century.

Incumbent Foucrault said the Coroner’s Office already connects family members with professional grief counselors.
