Wright among Niners' cuts

Former Monte Vista High School of Danville quarterback Kyle Wright was among the five players waived by the 49ers on Saturday.

Facing the Tuesday deadline of reducing their roster to 75 players, Wright, a rookie who played collegiately at Miami (Fla.), is joined in the unemployment line by second-year defensive tackle Joe Cohen, first-year tight end Cooper Wallace, rookie safety Lewis Baker and rookie guard John Booker.

Friday, the Niners named J.T. O'Sullivan their starting quarterback, with former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith the No. 2 QB and Shaun Hill the third-stringer.

Coming off a 37-30 victory Thursday over Chicago that improved their preseason record to 2-1, the 49ers host San Diego in their exhibition finale Friday at 7 p.m. at Candlestick Park.

The regular-season opener is Sept. 7 against the Arizona Cardinals at Candlestick.
