The driver of a semi truck accidentally struck and killed a laborer in the parking lot of the Fry's Electronics store in Palo Alto on Tuesday evening, a California Division of Occupational Safety and Health spokeswoman said Wednesday.

A 64-year-old man working for Oakley-based G&S Paving was struck and killed as the truck was backing up in the parking lot of the store at 340 Portage Ave., Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Patricia Ortiz said.

The collision occurred around 6:45 p.m., police said.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office today identified the victim as Richard Loza, of Pittsburg.

The G&S Paving crew had been working at the site and was cleaning up in preparation to leave the job for the day.

The truck driver stopped after hearing noises, Ortiz said.

"The driver found a mangled body beneath the wheels of the truck," she said.

CAL/OSHA is investigating the accident, including whether the truck had proper back-up alarms and other functions.
