Woman, twin daughters struck by van on Mission district sidewalk

A woman pushing two twin girls in a stroller was struck by a van as she walked along a sidewalk in San Francisco's Mission District on Monday morning, a police spokesman said.

The accident was reported at 9:54 a.m. near Folsom and 23rd streets, spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said.

The white van, driven by an 81-year-old man, was traveling south on Folsom Street and turned right onto westbound 23rd Street when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle went off the roadway and struck a building near the intersection, Andraychak said.

The van then continued south on the sidewalk and struck a woman in her 30s who was pushing the young twins. The force of the collision knocked the toddlers out of the stroller, according to Andraychak.

The van came to rest after striking a tree, which fell onto a parked pickup truck, he said.

The woman and two girls were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries, Andraychak said.

The 81-year-old man was also hospitalized, and may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash, Andraychak said. He was not cited or arrested.
