Woman slashed for no apparent reason

A woman was slashed in the neck in South of Market on Monday, police said.

The 34-year-old victim was in front of a hotel in the 400 block of Minna Street about 10:11 p.m. when a suspect came up behind her and grabbed her around the neck and threw her to the ground, police Officer Carlos Manfredi said. The thug then fled on foot.

When officers arrived they noticed the victim had a large cut on her neck and was bleeding, Manfredi said. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and is in stable condition.

The hotel’s video surveillance system recorded the attack, Manfredi said, and a responding officer said he recognized the assailant and knew where he lived. Cops went to that location and arrested the suspect, 48-year-old Harry Smith.
