Woman hit, killed by unlicensed driver

An elderly woman was killed Tuesday after an unlicensed driver struck her as she was crossing the street near the Cow Palace, police said.

Maria Francisco, 82, of San Francisco, was pronounced dead at the scene after a black van plowed into her in the 1700 block of Geneva Avenue around 5 p.m., authorities said.

She had been crossing the street in front of her home and was not in a marked crosswalk, police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said Wednesday.

The driver, a 23-year-old woman, slammed on the brakes but could not avoid hitting the victim, Dangerfield said. She remained at the scene and cooperated with police, he said.

The young woman was cited for driving with a suspended license. She was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Dangerfield said.

The accident remains under investigation, police said.

Geneva Avenue was shutdown for a short period following the accident.
