Woman goes on wild ride trying to retrieve stolen cellphone

A woman went to frightening lengths to retrieve her stolen cellphone Monday, hopping on the hood of a crook’s car as it drove up Leavenworth Street, police said.

Near the Post Street intersection around 5 a.m., a witness reported seeing the woman jump on the hood of a dark, four-door vehicle, and going for a ride, according to a report from Central Station police Capt. Kevin Cashman.

The car went north on Leavenworth Street with the woman still on the hood, then suddenly stopped, causing the woman to fall off, the witness told cops.

The car then drove around the woman and sped off, Cashman said.

The woman told the witness that the driver had stolen her cellphone. She suffered a slight head injury and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. Her condition was stable, Cashman said.

Police said the head injury may be the reason she was unable to provide further information about the thief or vehicle.
