Woman drives Mercedes into Verdugo Wash

Glendale police say a woman accidentally drove her luxury sedan into the Verdugo Wash after mistaking the concrete waterway for a freeway on-ramp and zipping down water-bearing concrete steps at 70 mph.

Sgt. Tom Lorenz says the vehicle was hauled out of the waterway Thursday using two tow trucks and crane before being towed away.

Getting the car out of the creek posed a challenge because it couldn't be moved backward or forward after the woman drove it down a long series of 3-foot steps and stopped before reaching an 8-foot drop.

San Fernando Road was closed for about an hour and a half during rush hour to remove the car.

The vehicle's driver, an unidentified, 53-year-old Glendale woman, was taken to a nearby hospital after complaining of back pain.
