Woman dies after beating on Oakland trail

A woman who was found severely beaten on a trail in the King Estates open space area in East Oakland on New Year's Day has died from her injuries, Oakland police said today.

Oakland police spokesman Roland Holmgren identified the woman as 19-year-old Jessica Birden and said she died Friday afternoon at Highland Hospital in Oakland.

Police are still trying to confirm where she lived.

Birden was unconscious when she was found 100 yards off Crest Avenue in the open space area, which is just below Interstate Highway 580, shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday by a person who was walking a dog.

Sgt. Michael Poirier said last week that Birden suffered from multiple blunt force trauma and investigators believe she had been lying on the trail for at least two hours before she was discovered.

Police initially didn't know Birden's identity but were able to establish it Thursday after she was identified by a family member.

Birden was taken to Highland Hospital after she was found but remained unconscious and in critical condition until she died.
