Brian Wilson will have his second Tommy John surgery in Pensacola, Fla., today to repair structural damage to his right elbow. Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure.

The Giants closer had the procedure in 2003, when he was pitching for LSU. He said before leaving the Bay Area that he plans on being around the ballpark plenty during his rehab process, and manager Bruce Bochy said he expects him back after the upcoming road trip.

Recovery time for the procedure has improved in recent years, generally coming at the shorter end of the prescribed 12 to 18 months, and Bochy said he hopes to have his closer back for the 2013 season.

“I think it’s a credit to our technology, but also on the rehab side of it, they’re doing a better job of getting these guys back on the mound throwing a little bit sooner,” Bochy said.
