Willie Nelson plays a family affair

Tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday, the legendary country outlaw Willie Nelson will be playing San Francisco’s Fillmore, billed as Willie Nelson & Family.

And he means it.

Also appearing onstage will be his guitarist son Lukas Nelson, who first toured with his dad as a toddler on a Highwaymen jaunt. And the apple didn’t fall far from the tree — with his own backing band Promise of the Real (whose eponymous debut is out on POTR Music), Junior stakes out bluesier, rockier terrain, with vocal tones that only occasionally recall Willie’s.

Lukas has the same zenlike, peace-and-love spirit, though. He’s an avid surfer who meditates daily and refuses to subscribe to any organized religion, and he started playing guitar at 11 as a birthday present to his father.

His own gift for songwriting, he says, “doesn’t really come from you anyway — it comes from wherever songs and music come from. If you get out of your own way and stop pretending like you have this superpower — which you don’t — and you’re just quiet enough with your mind to allow creativity to flow through you, then you can take it from the source. It takes away all the pressure, because it’s not you who has to come up with this great song.”
