Wife of slain man arrested at hospital

A San Francisco woman arrested for killing her sick husband in a possibly botched murder-suicide pact had recently suffered a stroke, and the couple was running out of money, a neighbor said Tuesday.

Police announced Wednesday that they arrested Rebecca Lattman, 66, at San Francisco General Hospital for fatally shooting her husband, Hans "Henry" Lattman, 76, before turning the gun on herself.

At 9:22 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to 370 Magellan Ave. on a well-being call from an out-of-state relative. Officers discovered both of the Lattmans inside their house with gunshot wounds, police spokesman Sgt. Neville Gittens said. Hans Lattman was pronounced dead at the scene and Rebecca Lattman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with critical injuries.

But the health of both of the Lattmans was deteriorating prior to the shooting.

Rebecca Lattman suffered a stroke about two weeks prior to her husband’s death, the couple’s friend and neighbor, Patricia Olcomendy, said Tuesday. Hans Lattman had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer about 10 years earlier and had been on disability from his job as a maintenance technician at an office building, Olcomendy said.

The Lattmans had little money, Olcomendy said, and Rebecca Lattman had lasting effects of her stroke that required care.

They were reclusive; Henry Lattman was an avid gardener and Rebecca kept many animals, she said.

Olcomendy described the Lattmans as "emotional," saying Hans Lattman had expressed a desire to commit suicide about 10 years ago, around the time he was diagnosed with cancer.

Other neighbors said they didn’t know much about the couple. A woman who lived next door to them but did not want her name used said that in 20 years of being neighbors, she had not gotten to know them well. "They were very quiet people," she said.

Olcomendy said she had become friendly with the Lattmans when their son, Peter Lattman, used to play with one of her sons.

Peter Lattman, now in his 40s, lives in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Olcomendy said. A number listed for Peter Lattman in Coeur d’Alene was out of service Wednesday.

The District Attorney’s Office charged Rebecca Lattman with one count of murder Wednesday, and intends to prosecute, spokeswoman Bilen Mesfin said.
