Whitman, Newsom invited to debate state climate change laws

An online media company wants gubernatorial hopefuls Meg Whitman and Mayor Gavin Newsom to duke it out after school, 3 p.m.

CleanTechnica.com, an environmentally-focused blogging site, has invited Newsom and the Republican candidate to an online debate regarding the state’s climate change legislation, AB32.

The debate idea was sparked by an op-ed piece Whitman wrote last week in the San Jose Mercury News saying she would “issue an executive order putting a moratorium on most AB32-related rules,” contending they would do further damage to the state’s economy.

Naturally, Newsom called the proposal “backwards thinking,” CleanTechnica says.

“We’re currently reaching out to Meg Whitman’s campaign, and offering her the chance…to participate in a live debate with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom,” said Clayton Cornell, CleanTechnica’s managing editor, in a letter today on the company’s Web site.
