White House, Boehner say NYT story is 'false'

The White House and House Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, are denying reports by the New York Times that the two sides are close to a "major budget deal" that would raise the debt ceiling and achieve significant savings by overhauling the tax system.

"There is no deal... we are not close to a deal," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said on Thursday, preempting reporters' questions at the top of the daily briefing.

Meanwhile, Boehner batted down the story from his Twitter account.

He tweeted "False" along with a link to the story, titled "Obama and Boehner close to a major deal, officials say."
