Welcome home, soccer league

The San Francisco Soccer Football League will hold its traditional premier game in Boxer Stadium instead of going to Daly City again because Rec and Park offered to let them pay the same price they’ve been paying for years.

The decision came after the league, which has about 70 teams, questioned whether they should stay in The City or find cheaper soccer fields elsewhere.

Last year their premier game was held at a high school in Daly City because it was about $25 an hour – compared to $3,200 for Boxer Stadium for the day – even though they had been playing at Boxer since the '50s.

And while most other teams stayed in The City and were still playing on its fields, overall price changes made the SFSFL reconsider keeping them here.

The league will pay its usual $1,200 – instead of the $3,200 that drove them away – for Boxer Stadium in Balboa Park on Sundays, starting with the premier game March 21.
