Weiner's resignation official midnight Tuesday

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., has sent New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announcing his resignation from the state's 9th District seat, effective Tuesday midnight.

The short letter was received this afternoon by the House leadership and will be read in the chamber when the House is back in session Tuesday.

Weiner resigned last week under pressure from leading Democrats after the congressman admitted to sending lewd messages and photos of himself to a half dozen women on Twitter and Facebook.

The governor will set a special election to fill the vacated seat.
