Weiner finally resigns

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., will resign his seat, Democratic sources confirm to The Washington Examiner.

Weiner has been under increasing pressure to step down over lewd pictures and texts he sent to women via social media sites.

Weiner on Monday asked for a two-week leave of absence in order to seek rehabilitative treatment of some kind, but the Democratic leadership said that wasn't enough. They were scheduled to meet today to strip him of his lone committee assignment on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

New York officials will have to set a time to hold a special election to replace Weiner, whose 9th District seat encompassing parts of Queens and Brooklyn is deemed safe for Democrats.
