Website hooks up interns, employers in SF

Alongside fellow co-founder Lauren Porat, Cari Sommer recently launched Urban Interns in San Francisco. The online marketplace helps growing companies find people seeking part-time work, internships, freelance and virtual positions.

How does Urban Interns operate? Job seekers can post a profile online for free, can actively search for job postings and can also highlight their profile by upgrading to a premium profile. Business owners can post one job for $49.95 per month and then have access to, and can contact people through, the private messaging platform.

Why did you launch in San Francisco? We looked for cities with a high job concentration of entrepreneurs and job seekers. Being one of the technology capitals of the world, San Francisco has the market. It was a natural next step for us [after New York].

What type of feedback have you had? Several businesses have come back multiple times and have hired numerous job seekers, some of which have transitioned into full-time work.

How would you like to see Urban Interns develop? We’d like to launch in more cities and refine our product with new and more-sophisticated features.
