Water main break floods RWC streets

A truck hit a fire hydrant while parking in Redwood City on Wednesday afternoon, sending water dozens of feet in the air and into a nearby furniture store.

The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. at Broadway and Cassia streets.

Firefighters quickly responded and shut off the water, soaking themselves in the process.

Damage was reported at the Great Western Furniture store located at 1748 Broadway St., in front of the fire hydrant.

"The water went onto the roof and came around the building," Redwood City fire Capt. Dan Tomczak said.

The owner of the store, John Loeb, said the water caused the computer and phone systems to turn off.

Water also flooded the store's warehouse, soaking boxes, and got the store's carpet wet. About 15 couches were damaged.

"We just didn't need this right now," Loeb said.
