Water is wet, Pope Catholic, and gun manufacturers raise money for the NRA 

The Center for Public Integrity just sent out the following press release. I don't know about you, but I'm outrageously outraged:

High-Capacity Bullet Magazine Makers Raise Millions for NRA

WASHINGTON, D.C. January 18, 2011 — It’s no accident the National Rifle Association staunchly supports high-capacity magazines – it gets money from their manufacturers every day.

Missouri-based gun company MidwayUSA pioneered a fundraising tactic called “Round-Up.” The program involves asking customers to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar. The company then donates the difference to the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, a lobbying arm of the gun rights group.

Since 1992, MidwayUSA, along with other firearm companies, have funneled a total of $7.5 million to the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action using the “Round-Up” tactic.

MidwayUSA’s wares include high-capacity magazines similar to those used in the Arizona shooting spree that enabled the accused assailant to kill six people and wound 14 others — including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Gun manufacturer gives money to the NRA! What?

This news is not at all surprising nor in any way suggestive of impropriety, despite the Center for Public Integrity's breathless language here. It's hard to imagine that if these magazine manufacturers weren't supporting the NRA that the organization would be cool with banning their product.

There are a lot of reasons to argue for gun control, but I have to say that totally unsurprising hyperbole probably not the best way to go.
