Warriors’ Thompson on Sports Illustrated cover

Klay Thompson’s big season just got a little bigger.

The standout shooting guard for the Warriors is featured on the regional cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated with the headline “Klay Thompson’s Warriors.” It is the latest honor for Thompson, 25, who just participated in his first NBA All-Star Game (he was selected as a reserve but was an injury-replacement starter), finished second to teammate Stephen Curry in the Three-Point Shootout, scored an NBA-record 37 points in a quarter and signed a four-year, $70 million contract extension.

At 42-9, the Warriors have the best record in the NBA, thanks in large part to Thompson’s 22.1 points, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is also shooting 47.1 percent overall, including 44 percent from 3-point range. All of those numbers are career highs.

This after being rumored all summer to be involved in a possible trade to Minnesota for Kevin Love.

Thompson’s SI cover appearance is the third by the Warriors in the past two years. Curry appeared on the 2013-14 season preview and 2013 playoff preview. It is also the 11th time the Warriors have been featured on the SI cover.

And Thompson isn’t the first player from his family to be featured on the cover.

Father Mychael and his Los Angeles Lakers teammates were on the playoff preview cover in 1988.

McAdoo signed for rest of season: The Warriors have signed forward James Michael McAdoo for the remainder of the season.

The team announced the move Thursday shortly after the NBA trading deadline passed. The Warriors, a league-best 42-9, made no deals at the deadline.

The 22-year-old McAdoo has played in four games with Golden State this season, averaging 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds in five minutes. He signed a 10-day contract with the Warriors on Jan. 19 and another 10-day contract with the team Feb. 2.

The undrafted rookie out of North Carolina has played in 26 games with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA Development League this season, averaging 19.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.12 steals and 2.31 blocks while shooting 57.8 percent.
