Walnut Creek mobile forensic lab going to Super Bowl

A mobile Walnut Creek forensic laboratory will be sent to assist law enforcement agencies in Arizona during this year's Super Bowl, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced today.

The rapid response laboratory will provide preliminary on-scene forensic examinations as needed for the Feb. 3 football game in Glendale, Ariz., according to Donna Read, ATF's laboratory chief in San Francisco.

The mobile laboratory can be outfitted with discipline-specific equipment to meet the needs of each particular crime scene.

Rapid response laboratories are often used at special events such as the Olympics, the G-8 Summit and the Republican National Convention.

The Walnut Creek laboratory is one of only three mobile laboratories in the nation in service by the bureau.

A San Francisco forensic chemist will be deployed along with the laboratory, Read said.
