VMware tops Bay Area stocks 

Palo Alto-based VMware Inc. (VMW) rose more than 3.9 percent by the close of the markets Wednesday, the biggest move seen among local stocks today.

Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) also rose by more than 3.4 percent. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Sun Microsystems Inc. (JAVA) fell more than 2.9 percent and Verisign Inc. (VRSN) more than 2 percent.

The markets were up overall today, with the Dow Jones closing up more than 0.3 percent, the Nasdaq more than 0.7 percent and the S&P 500 more than 0.6 percent.

Companies in the news included San Jose-based Ebay Inc. (EBAY), which reportedly plans to focus on improving the user experience next year, according to a top executive.
