VMware, Salesforce.com finish down 

Palo Alto’s VMware Inc. (VMW) dropped more than 9.3 percent by the close of trading Monday, the largest change seen among local stocks tracked by the Examiner. San Francisco-based Salesforce.com (CRM) also declined, falling more than 5.5 percent.

On the positive side, Verisign Inc. (VRSN) rose more than 2.6 percent while San Jose’s SunPower Corp. (SPWR) rose more than 1.9 percent.

The markets closed down overall Monday, with the Dow Jones dropping 237.44 points, more than 1.8 percent, the Nasdaq more than 2.1 percent and the S&P 500 more than 2.3 percent.

Local companies in the news included Sunnyvale-based Yahoo Inc. (YHOO), whose payment processing system was suffering periodic outages on Monday, preventing some customers from completing online purchases.
