  • Tall order: Stanford’s Nicole Gibbs will meet Serena Williams in the Bank of the West Classic today after winning her match Tuesday.

This past season, Stanford junior Nicole Gibbs captured the NCAA singles and doubles titles. After Tuesday’s 6-4, 6-4 victory against Noppawan Lertcheewakarn at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, she can add another notable accomplishment to her resume: a match with Serena Williams.

Gibbs’ first-round victory sets up a second-round contest today against Williams, who is fresh off winning her fifth Wimbledon crown.

For Williams, she is eager to defend the Bank of the West Classic title she won in 2011 that signaled her return after missing nearly a year recovering from serious health problems.

"This is the place that spurred me on last year," Williams said.

Other winners Tuesday were Marina Erakovic defeating Jana Juricova 6-2, 6-2; Erika Sema topping Alexa Glatch 6-2, 6-3; Coco Vandeweghe knocking off Melinda Czink 6-4, 6-1; and Saisai Zheng winning when Ayumi Morita retired from the match early.
