Veteran ump will be behind the plate

The umpire with the longest continuous service in baseball history will be the crew chief for the July 10 All-Star Game at AT&T Park.

Major League Baseball on Thursday announced Bruce Froemming, who this year passed Hall of Famer Bill Klem as the ump with the most consecutive years of service at 37 and has umped 5,039 games (second-most in history; Klem has 5,376), will be behind the plate for the Midsummer Classic. Froemming, 68, also revealed Thursday that he will be retiring after this season.

It will be the third All-Star Game for Froemming (1975, ’86), who has also worked five World Series, 10 league championship series and eight division series.

Joining Froemming in the six-man crew are Charlie Reliford (first base), Mike Winters (second base), Kerwin Danley (third base), Ted Barrett (left field) and Bill Miller (right field). Reliford and Winters are the only ones with previous All-Star experience, each having participated in one. The official scorers will be Chuck Dybdal — who is the scorer for Giants and A’s home games — Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Andrew Baggerly of the San Jose Mercury News.

Umpiring in the Futures Game on July 8 will be David Rackley (Texas League) behind the plate, John Brammer (Texas League) at first base, Jason Bradley (Southern League) at second base and Francis Burke (Eastern League) at third base. All are Double-A umpires.
