USPS offers extra services for holidays

The mail service in Northern California has added extra locations and hours in preparation for the nation’s busiest mail day Monday as customers try to get their mail sent in time for it to arrive on Christmas.

"In San Francisco, we expect to postmark almost 2 million cards and letters," said Senior Plant Manager Jim Larkin. "It’s our biggest night of the year, and we are prepared for the onslaught."

To help facilitate the increased numbers, more than two dozen post offices in the San Francisco District will offer extended hours during the holiday season, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

The USPS has also opened two holiday post offices in busy shopping areas, at the Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno and at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Both locations will be open seven days a week.

Customers can go online to www.usps.com to find the hours of their local post office.

For those who didn’t get their cards or packages to the post office by today, they haven’t missed their chance.

"If customers mail their Express Mail package by [Saturday], we will deliver it by Christmas Day," said Larkin.
