USF’s Walters receives contract extension

USF and men’s basketball coach Rex Walters agreed to a contract extension through 2015, the university announced Wednesday.

Walters guided the Dons to a fourth-place finish (7-7) in the West Coast Conference in a year when half of the league’s members earned postseason berths, including NCAA Sweet 16 participant St. Mary’s.

“I just want to thank Debbie Gore-Mann and Charlie Cross for doing this for me,” said Walters, whose club finished 12-18 overall. “It is important that our current student-athletes and recruits know that there is a commitment from USF to keep me here to coach them. I really appreciate all the support from the athletic department and administration. It means a lot to me.”

USF posted a four-victory improvement in 2010 in the WCC, highlighted by an 81-77 overtime victory against No. 8 Gonzaga Jan. 30 at War Memorial Gym.
