USF baseball picked to finish third in WCC preseason poll 

The USF baseball team was predicted to finish third in the West Coast Conference preseason poll, while a pair of Dons were named to the preseason All-Conference team. Senior right-hander Doug Murray, who went 9-0 last season, and junior third baseman Stephen Yarrow, who hit .277 with 13 home runs, were both named to the All-Conference squad. USF, led by 12th-year coach Nino Giarratano, finished third in the conference last season.

Masoli named in police report: Oregon quarterback and former City College of San Francisco star Jeremiah Masoli is one of two players Eugene, Ore., police are investigating in an alleged theft that took place on campus. An Oregon student is claiming two MacBook Pro computers and a $900 guitar were taken.

Fields earns honor: Stanford senior Landry Fields was named the Pac-10 Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week after leading the Cardinal to a sweep of the Oregon schools last week. In the two games, Fields averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Non-BCS schools strike it rich: The five college football conferences that don’t get automatic bids to the Bowl Championship Series will receive a record $24 million from this year’s bowl games, according to BCS figures obtained by The Associated Press.
