Uncovered: Bronx cop ticket-fixing epidemic investigated by grand jury

WHAT: A grand jury is investigating near-epidemic traffic ticket-fixing by Bronx police officers either doing favors for friends, relatives and friends of friends — or worse, for payoffs.

HOW: Police union leaders are suspected of serving as Mr. Fix-Its — conveying requests (which often originate from higher-up officers) and making sure that favors are carried out.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: As many as 40 officers could face criminal charges when the grand jury finishes in July, and hundreds more may face disciplinary proceedings. Meanwhile, internal affairs detectives and Bronx prosecutors are all over the station houses.
