Two people have been arrested in the East Bay in connection with the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man in South of Market on Friday night, police said Sunday.

Anthony Pratt, 27, of Union City, and Trumillion Ballard, 24, of San Francisco, were arrested Saturday evening in Union City on suspicion of killing Gary Smith in front of the Baldwin House Hotel at 74 Sixth St.

Smith, an Oakland resident, was found on the sidewalk about 11:10 p.m. Friday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 5 p.m. Saturday, Union City police stopped two vehicles and detained four people, one of whom was caught after fleeing on foot into a nearby business. All four were turned over to San Francisco homicide investigators.

San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said on Sunday that Pratt and Ballard had been arrested on murder charges and an investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday afternoon, a memorial of candles and flowers for “G-Baby” was set up just outside the hotel, which locals said Smith was known to frequent.

While police have not released a motive for the killing, one mourner and a hotel employee, both of whom declined to give their names, said Smith had argued with his ex-girlfriend and was shot by men who arrived a short time later.

The hotel is next door to the location of a planned police substation aimed at addressing rampant crime along the Sixth Street corridor and Market Street.

“Between drugs and ill repute, yes, it’s a war zone,” said Oscar Wesley, 45, who said he’s lived at Baldwin House for about two months but didn’t know Smith.

Hotel surveillance video might have captured Smith’s shooting. It has been shared with investigators, an employee said.
