Mother and child struck by vehicle near Stonestown Galleria

A 45-year-old woman and her 5-year-old child have been taken to a hospital after being struck by a SUV Wednesday afternoon near Stonestown Galleria, San Francisco police reported.

The incident was reported at 12:23 p.m. near Buckingham Way and 20th Avenue, according to Sgt. Michael Andraychak.

The child's injuries are life-threatening, while the mother's injuries aren't life-threatening, Andraychak said.

The mother was walking with her child in a westbound direction in the crosswalk of Buckingham Way. Meanwhile, an 86-year-old woman was driving a white SUV southbound on 20th Street.

The SUV struck both pedestrians in the crosswalk. The driver stopped after the crash, and was cooperative with police, Andraychak said.

Andraychak said the crash remains under investigation, and it's unknown why the driver didn't stop for the pedestrians.

Police have not identified the pedestrians or the driver.

DUI is not considered to be a factor in the crash.

Police closed the intersection to traffic while investigating the incident.
