Saturday started with a jolt for the East Bay and San Francisco, thanks to two small earthquakes shortly after midnight.

The first of the two, a 2.8 magnitude quake, came just minutes after midnight and was followed by a second shake, 2.5 magnitude, at 12:45 a.m., about 2 miles from Berkeley, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Both were aftershocks from Thursday afternoon’s 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Berkeley, said USGS geophysicist Paul Caruso.
