Two portable toilets set ablaze in Castro district

Smells like arson.

Two portable toilets within blocks of each other were set ablaze just after midnight in the Castro district Sunday.

The burnt toilets were in front of homes that are under construction, police said Monday.

One of the toilets was at 18th and Sanchez streets, the other at 18th and Douglass streets. In both cases, the back sides of the portable toilets melted, police said.

There were no injures, and there have been no arrests.

Portable toilet arsons are an ongoing and periodic occurrence in San Francisco.

Last month, a portable toilet caught fire on Van Ness Avenue, damaging a parked car. The blaze occurred in the same general area of The City where dozens of portable toilets were scorched by a serial arsonist in 2008 and 2009.

In October, a transient was arrested soon after eight portable toilets and three portable hand-washing stations were torched at a Mission Bay construction site.
