Two men were shot in the legs during a fight between a large group of people in the Bayview on Monday, and the shooting resulted in the lockdown of a nearby elementary school, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

The incident reportedly began near Bret Harte Elementary School at Hawes Street and Gilman Avenue about 3:26 p.m., Esparza said.

Two men in a black 2-door vehicle began firing shots at the two victims who were in another vehicle, Esparza said.

Police were alerted to the shooting by the ShotSpotter system and while they were on their way, the two victims drove themselves to the hospital.

The victims, a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old man, both received gunshot wounds to their legs.

The suspects fled the scene before police arrived, Esparza said. There is little detailed description of the suspects because the victims in the shooting have not been cooperative with police.

Bret Harte was locked down during the course of the dispute.
