Two killed in Berkeley shooting

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of two men early this morning in Berkeley.

Police received multiple reports of shots fired just after midnight in the 1400 block of Derby Street just to the east of Sacramento Street, according to Berkeley police spokesman Andrew Frankel.

Officers arriving to the area found a man lying dead against the curb, the victim of apparent gunshot wounds. The victim has been identified as a 45-year-old Oakland man, according to Frankel.

A few minutes later, officers responded to a nearby traffic collision in the 1500 block of Derby Street. Investigators concluded that the driver was involved in the shooting, and was traveling away from the shooting eastbound before succumbing to his gunshot wounds and crashing into a parked car, Frankel said.

The driver of the car has been identified as a 26-year-old Berkeley man, Frankel said.

Police have not established a motive for the shooting yet, and the investigation is ongoing, according to Frankel.
