Truck pins two elderly people to Mission sidewalk

A pickup truck partially crushed two elderly pedestrians in the Mission district after it collided with another car and went onto the sidewalk Monday afternoon.

A witness said passers-by helped roll the truck off of the victims, whom paramedics transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where they were in critical condition.

San Francisco police Sgt. Steve Mannina said it was unclear initially who had the green light as the small Toyota pickup truck, heading east on 23rd Street, entered the intersection at Mission Street at about 1 p.m. It collided with another car that was traveling south on Mission. The impact sent the pickup truck onto the sidewalk, where the two victims did not have time to get out of the way.

Many pedestrians on the busy sidewalk scrambled out of the way as the truck careered toward them, witnesses said. The man walked with a cane, one witness said, and could not move quickly. The woman was also elderly. It is not clear if the two know each other.

Mannina said it was not clear which vehicle had the right of way, but, he said, "It’s safe to say that one of them was in violation of some part of the vehicle code." Witnesses said the car traveling on Mission hit the truck.

"It was going that way," said Cesar Oyagata, who sells souveniers from an outdoor table at 23rd and Mission streets. He said he had his back to the intersection at the time of the impact, but spun around as soon as he heard the crash. "I saw two or three people under there, under the truck," he said.

Oyagata and other witnesses described the driver of the truck as a white man in his early 20s. The driver of the car, they said, was a Hispanic woman in her 30s. Neither driver was hurt. Mannina said both drivers stayed at the scene after the crash.

The truck appeared to be resting on the legs of the victims, witnesses said. After it came to rest, a group of people pushed it off.

At press time, the San Francisco Chief Medical Examiner’s Office said neither victim had died.
