Trio of tricksters offering cure with dangerous test

A trio of scam artists has struck The City’s Chinese community again and police are warning would-be targets to keep their fingers out of strange liquids.

The latest victim lost $900 just over three weeks ago when the suspects convinced her to test her health by dipping a digit in a teacup full of water. If the water turns color, according to the scam, the victim is sick and in need of a costly miracle cure.

But instead of just turning color, the liquid seeps through the skin and makes the victim dizzy, police said.

Cheung said the scam preys on elderly women who are concerned about their health and aren’t opposed to alternative medicine. He added that herbal remedies are big in Chinese culture and the suspects, a woman in her late 40s and two men, are all Chinese.
