Transient man struck, killed by freight train

A 39-year-old man fatally struck by a freight train near Concord this morning was likely a transient whose last known address was in San Francisco, Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, reportedly sat on the tracks before being hit by an oncoming BNSF Railway Co. train at about 5:10 a.m., BNSF spokeswoman Lena Kent said.

He did not move when two crewmembers aboard the train repeatedly blew the whistle, Kent said.

The train was on its way from Richmond to Chicago, Kent said.

The man was killed near Solano Way and Interstate Highway 680, Lee said.

The incident is being investigated by the BNSF's police agency.
