Train station at Transbay Transit Center given $400M

The federal government made final plans to provide $400 million for an underground train station planned in the South of Market area.

Tardy administration of $2.25 billion in high-speed rail stimulus funds delayed construction of the Transbay Transit Center at First and Mission streets by a year. But the $400 million stimulus will allow local agencies to incorporate a train station beneath the elaborate bus terminal, which could open in 2017.

A memorandum of understanding with the Federal Railroad Administration regarding use of the $400 million was endorsed Thursday by Transbay Joint Powers Authority directors.
