Too late to wait for turnarounds

The bye weeks are over — and so are most of the trade deadlines. But that doesn’t mean fine-tuning your roster is no longer an option.

While we’ve pretty much diluted the whole pick-up-players-after-a-big-game scheme, there’s another way to provide insurance for your team.

If you have players killing roster space in hopes of breaking out of that funk, you’re too deep into the season for that kind of hope. You’re better off picking up backups that may have a chance to play due to injuries to the guys in front of them.

Philadelphia quarterback A.J. Feeley is the first to come to mind. Donovan McNabb hasn’t practiced all week and even if he’s healthy, look at his track record. What are the chances of him finishing the season? Trust me, you’re far better off having Feely than having Daunte Culpepper.

Another option is Houston running back Adimchinobi Echemandu. While we still don’t know what’s going on with Ahman Green, current starter Ron Dayne can’t do it all by himself. He’s bound to need some rest at some point.

Other backups include Green Bay running back Brandon Jackson, Indianapolis running back Kenton Keith, Denver running back Andre Hall, Arizona quarterback Tim Rattay (yes, THAT Tim Rattay), New England receiver Donte Stallworth and Seattle tight end Will

Heller.

STONE-COLD LOCK: Jay Cutler vs. Bears: The mystique of the Bears having an unstoppable defense is gone. Nobody should be scared of the Bears’ "D." And after Cutler’s game under the Monday night lights, this a favorable matchup against a team with a struggling secondary. If you don’t believe me, look at the stats — the Bears are ranked 22nd against the pass.
