Toboni triggers second-half run 

Paul Toboni scored 23 points and took over the game in the third quarter as host St. Ignatius overcame a 13-point deficit to knock off Riordan 45-41 in a West Catholic Athletic League boys’ basketball opener Wednesday.

The senior guard scored five of the Wildcats’ six baskets in the third quarter — including a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 32 seconds remaining in the period to give St. Ignatius (10-2, 1-0) its first lead of the game at 34-33. Riordan (7-4, 0-1) stayed close and had a chance to tie with the ball down three in the final seconds, but the Wildcats forced a turnover and then hit a free throw to seal the win.

Senior center Vince Legarza added 16 points and six rebounds for St. Ignatius, as he and Toboni combined for 39 of the Wildcats’ 45 points. Daniel Cannon had 13 points and Jorge Camacho chipped in 10 for the Crusaders. Riordan hit buzzer-beating 3-pointers at the end of both the first and second quarters and led 28-18 at the half.

SERRRA 78, SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL 66 (OT)

SAN MATEOStephen Lumpkins scored 24 of his 38 points in the second half, including five in overtime as the Padres (10-2, 1-0) rallied past the Irish (8-5, 0-1).

Serra’s Tim Dunleavy forced overtime by drilling a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left in regulation to tie it 61-61.

Lumpkins also had a game-high 13 rebounds as Serra outscored Sacred Heart 18-10 in the fourth quarter.
