Tipster on Antelope Valley dogfights rewarded

An Antelope Valley man will go to jail Friday for 365 days for pleading no contest to 31 counts of felony dog fighting, willful animal cruelty and neglect.

Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley on Thursday announced a $5,000 reward for the anonymous tipster who reported 44-year-old Jesse Jimenez and his wife, who has served her sentence.

At a news conference, Cooley introduced an 11-month-old pit bull that survived the dogfights at the couple's Lake Los Angeles home and has since been adopted. The dog is one of 14 taken from Jimenez.

Before California shifted lower-level inmates from state prisons to county jails, Jimenez would have faced up to five years in custody. Cooley says people need to urge lawmakers to add animal cruelty to the list of prison-eligible crimes.
