Ting warns of cons

Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting will join other Bay Area assessors and Assemblymember Ted Lieu on Tuesday on the steps of City Hall to warn homeowners not to fall victim to con artists who are sending misleading letters asking for money to file property tax reduction requests.

“The fact is, this same service is provided for free from the county assessor’s office, and there is no need for anyone to pay any fee to facilitate a property tax reduction,” according to an advisory from Ting’s office.

The event also plugs Lieu’s bill in Sacramento. “AB 992, a new law authored by Assemblymember Lieu, will prevent these deceptive letters from being mailed to homeowners,” the advisory said.
