Thunder Valley is hiring to staff expansion

Thunder Valley Casino Resort, northeast of Sacramento near Lincoln and Roseville, is accepting applications for 600 new employees for its hotel and gambling expansion that should be complete by July.

Many casinos have delayed or scaled back expansion plans during the Great Recession.

Thunder Valley, after a few-month delay last year due to the slow economy, has moved ahead with construction of its hotel tower, an event venue and more gambling, restaurants and a parking garage.

Because the expansion involves the entire operation, including the opening of a hotel, there are a variety of hospitality and gambling positions, from entry level to management, said Doug Elmets, casino spokesman.

Nearly 200 of the new positions will be in the hotel and spa, and another 400 positions will be in the casino. People can apply online. Interviews begin in March and continue into April; initial hiring should be complete by May 15.

“We are incredibly excited to be able to create over 600 new jobs for the local community,” Jessica Tavares, chairwoman of the United Auburn Indian Community, said in a released statement. “At a time when there is so much bad news about the economy, we believe our new hotel, spa and expanded casino will continue to be an economic engine for this region.”

More than half the new positions are full-time, which include dental, vision and health benefits, and paid time off. Part-time positions qualify for paid time off, and for eligible workers there is a 401(k) plan.

Thunder Valley, which opened in 2003, is owned by the United Auburn Indian Community, a rancheria that includes Miwok and Maidu Indians. It has about 1,700 employees and is one of the largest employers in Placer County.

Three years ago, Thunder Valley announced plans for a much larger project, including a 23-story tower — an expansion reportedly valued at $1 billion. The sour economy led to the scaled-back plan. Officials didn’t divulge final costs.
